Learn about the IP PIN program to protect taxpayers from tax fraud

The IRS continues to expand the IP PIN Program nationwide as part of its efforts to protect taxpayers against tax fraud and identity theft. The IP PIN, a six-digit code known only to the taxpayer and the IRS, is used to ensure the authenticity of filed tax returns. IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig noted that the IP PIN functions as a "key" that protects the taxpayer's tax account, rejecting electronic returns without the correct PIN and subjecting paper returns to additional verifications. The IP PIN program, implemented nearly a decade ago to protect confirmed victims of identity theft, has expanded from specific states nationwide, allowing all taxpayers in the country to access this extra layer of security on their tax returns.

Here are some important keys about the IP PIN subscription program:

It is a voluntary program that requires a rigorous identity verification process.

Spouses and dependents may also be eligible to obtain an IP PIN if they can verify their identities.

Each IP PIN is valid for one calendar year and must be renewed each filing season.

The online IP PIN tool is not available between November and mid-January each year.

The IP PIN must be entered correctly on electronic and paper tax returns to avoid rejections and delays.

The IRS will never ask for your IP PIN by phone, text message or email. Taxpayers are warned to be on the lookout for scams that attempt to steal their IP PIN.

Taxpayers who wish to obtain an IP PIN can do so by visiting IRS.gov/IPPIN and using the "Get an IP PIN" tool. This online process requires taxpayers to verify their identity through the Secure Access authentication process if they do not already have an IRS account. The option to file a Form 15227 is also offered for those whose adjusted gross income is $72,000 or less.

Overall, the IP PIN program is an important measure to protect taxpayers' identity and financial information at a time when cybersecurity and identity theft are growing concerns. Taxpayers are encouraged to use this tool to ensure the security of their tax returns.
