September isn't just any month for corporations and small businesses in the U.S. Two key deadlines fall on the same day — September 15th — and both can have a real impact on your business's finances if overlooked.
Estimated Tax Payment: Q3
If your business doesn't have automatic tax withholding — as is the case for LLC owners, partnership members, or S-Corp shareholders — September 15th is the deadline for the third quarter estimated tax payment. This payment corresponds to income earned between June and August, and paying on time avoids interest accumulating on the outstanding amount. The IRS calculates that interest daily, so the longer the payment is delayed, the higher the additional cost.
Extended Deadline: S-Corps and Partnerships
If your business is an S-Corporation or a partnership and you requested an extension earlier this year, September 15th is also the final deadline to file that return. After this date, any delay can result in additional penalties, which are typically calculated per month (or part of a month) of delay, and per partner or shareholder in the entity.
Why September deserves your attention
Many businesses treat these dates as secondary compared to April 15th, but in practice, September can carry the same financial weight — especially for structures like S-Corps and partnerships, where the deadlines and rules differ from a personal tax return. In addition, how the entity's return is filed in September can directly affect each partner's or shareholder's personal return later in the year.
A month to review, not just to pay
September is also a good time to pause and review how the business is doing overall: whether this year's earnings are on track with projections, whether the estimated payment amount is still accurate, and whether any adjustments should be made before the fiscal year ends.
