New Tax Credits for Home Energy Improvements!

post img

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reminds taxpayers that making certain energy-efficient updates to their homes could qualify them for home improvement tax credits. The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act expanded credit amounts and eligible expense types. Taxpayers can claim the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit and Residential Clean Energy Credit for eligible expenses incurred each year.

Primary homeowners have more opportunities to claim eligible expenses. Tenants and owners of second homes used as residences may also be eligible, but landlords cannot claim this credit.

The IRS encourages taxpayers to review all requirements and qualifications at IRS.gov/HomeEnergy before making a purchase. Additionally, more details are available at energy.gov, comparing credit amounts for tax years 2022 and 2023-2032.

Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit: Taxpayers making qualified energy-efficient improvements to their homes after January 1, 2023, may qualify for a tax credit of up to $3,200. The credit equals 30% of certain qualified expenses, such as energy efficiency improvements installed during the year and residential energy property expenses.

The credit is nonrefundable, meaning taxpayers cannot receive more from the credit than what is owed in taxes, and any excess credit cannot be carried to future tax years.

Residential Clean Energy Credit: Taxpayers investing in energy improvements for their primary residence, including solar, wind, geothermal, fuel cells, or battery storage, may qualify for an annual residential clean energy tax credit. The credit equals 30% of the costs of new, qualified clean energy property installed anytime from 2022 through 2032. Qualified expenses include the costs of new, clean energy equipment such as solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal heat pumps, and battery storage technology.

For more information on qualifying residences and for taxpayers who also use their home for business, visit IRS.gov. When it's time to file a tax return, taxpayers can use Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits, to claim the credit.

Maintaining good records of purchases and expenses is essential. Publications 5967 and 5968 provide more details on eligibility criteria. With these tax credit opportunities, taxpayers can improve their homes' energy efficiency and benefit from long-term savings on energy costs.
