The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officially announced the start of the 2024 tax filing season on January 29, 2024. From this date, the agency has been accepting and processing declarations for the fiscal year 2023. Over 128.7 million taxpayers are expected to file their individual declarations before the April 15, 2024, deadline. To streamline the process, the IRS has implemented several improvements and tools to make the tax filing experience easier and more efficient. Although the official acceptance of declarations began on January 29, taxpayers did not need to wait until then to prepare their taxes. Many software companies accept electronic submissions in advance and hold them until the IRS begins processing. Additionally, the IRS Free File program has been available since January 12, allowing taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of $79,000 or less to use tax software for free. Notable improvements for the 2024 tax season include:
Expanded In-Person Service: The IRS will open or reopen Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) to provide in-person service to taxpayers, with extended hours in many TACs nationwide.
Improvements to the Toll-Free Line and "Where's My Refund?" Tool: Enhanced assistance is available on the toll-free line, and updates to the "Where's My Refund?" tool have been improved to provide more detailed information and reduce the need for calls to the IRS.
Enhanced Paperless Processing: Taxpayers can submit all correspondence, non-tax forms, and responses to notices digitally, in addition to electronically filing an additional 20 tax forms.
Enhanced IRS Online Individual Account: The IRS online account will offer new features, such as chat, program options, and cancellation of future payments, review of payment plans, and validation of multiple bank accounts.
New Direct File Pilot Service: This service will allow eligible taxpayers to file their federal tax returns for 2023 online for free directly with the IRS, with a full launch expected by mid-March. The deadline for tax filing for most taxpayers is April 15, 2024. However, residents of Maine and Massachusetts have until April 17 due to local holidays. The IRS urges taxpayers to prepare in advance, organize all necessary information, and file electronically with direct deposit to expedite the process and avoid delays in refunds. For more information and resources, taxpayers can visit IRS.gov, where they will find online tools, interactive tax assistants, and free assistance programs by IRS-certified volunteers. The IRS Free File program begins on January 12, providing free tax filing options for eligible taxpayers.
