As part of National Small Business Week, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is reminding taxpayers and business owners that although the April 15 filing deadline has passed, tax scams continue to occur throughout the year.
In early 2025, the IRS released its annual “Dirty Dozen” list, highlighting some of the most common scams that affect small businesses. These include fake clients, fraudulent charitable organizations, misleading advice on social media, and false tax credit claims.
How to Protect Your Business
- The IRS urges small businesses to take proactive steps to safeguard against fraud and protect their data. Key recommendations include:
- Be alert for fake W-2 form requests, especially after the filing deadline.
- Use antivirus or antimalware software with automatic updates.
- Set strong passwords and enable multifactor authentication.
- Only enter personal or business data on secure websites (https).
Business owners should also prioritize protecting their Employer Identification Number (EIN), keeping it up to date, and making any changes using the official IRS Form 8822-B.
How to Report a Scam
- The IRS provides official channels to report scams or data theft:
- Report IRS- or tax-related scams: phishing@irs.gov
- Report W-2 data loss incidents: dataloss@irs.gov
- Report identity disclosures to states: statealert@taxadmin.org
